As she did in her first two books, Embroidered Treasures: Flowers (2018) and Embroidered Treasures: Birds (2018), English textile artist Collinge here freely draws upon the collection of the Embroiderers’ Guild (established in 1906), carefully selecting around 100 pieces from the guild’s nearly 6,000-item collection. Each work shared here includes a representation of some sort of animal figure, whether real or fantastical. A few works illustrate each chapter, and every color sample features notes about technique, date, place of origin, size, and maker (if known). Needlework enthusiasts will find much to linger over: An elephant beaded purse, the very contemporary “No Tortoise,” whimsical cat slippers, a stunning Japanese kimono, and embroidered WWI postcards. Without Collinge’s skilled effort, most readers wouldn’t have access to this elegant and fascinating members-only collection.
