This approachable early chapter book follows Poppet, an adventurous puppy, and her devoted owner, Amelia, in a suspenseful yet gentle story of separation and reunion. Told across eight short chapters, the narrative alternates between the perspectives of both girl and dog, allowing readers to experience the worry, determination, and hope on each side of the search. When a simple game of fetch on a wooded trail goes wrong, Poppet tumbles down a hill and becomes trapped. As night falls, Amelia’s family is forced to leave without her, setting off a heartfelt search that drives the remainder of the story. The text is supported by plentiful black-and-white illustrations rendered in fine, textured line work that adds visual interest and helps break up the chapters. These illustrations, combined with the short length and accessible vocabulary, make the book an excellent choice for readers transitioning from early readers to chapter books. The pacing is brisk, and the emotional stakes remain reassuringly appropriate for younger audiences, with a satisfying, safe resolution. VERDICT A compelling and accessible first chapter book; recommended for early elementary collections and animal-story fans.–School Library Journal
