In a world where few people have uncovered the secret to godhood, the God of Merriment announces an Ascension Trial to determine who will inherit his divinity. In this dangerous once-a-century competition, a select few demigods vie in seclusion at Merriment Manor, where they’re forced to solve inscrutable puzzles. Only the children of gods are eligible to participate in the Trial: divinity will not be shared with the common people.

But Fawn decides to trick her way in. A teenage con artist, she might be able to lift the curse that the God of Shadow placed on her family—if she wins. But when Fawn arrives, she’s surprised to find she’s not the only impostor there: her rival Mackie has also scammed her way into the competition for secret reasons of her own.

Locked in Merriment Manor, Mackie and Fawn find the competition more cutthroat than they could ever imagine. When demigods start disappearing and the tasks turn dangerous, the rivals realize there’s more to this competition than meets the eye. Against all odds, Mackie and Fawn must rely on each other. . . or risk certain death.
