Discussion Questions:
1. When we first meet Star, she’s determined not to commit herself to any one career. Does the freedom of moving job to job appeal to you?
2. Even though her closest friends, Roger, Kendall, and Jude, have proven to her that commitment can work, Star is stubbornly set against a long-term monogamous relationship because of her parents. Do you sympathize with Star’s fear of commitment?
3. Star agrees to fake-date Rafe because he’s offering her the financial opportunity to travel. Would you ever agree to fake-date someone? If so, what would the ideal circumstances be?
4. Star is aware of her physical attraction to Rafe before she agrees to fake-date him but doesn’t think it’ll be a problem because of how different they are. Do you think you could stay in a platonic relationship with someone you were attracted to?
5. Lying to Rafe’s family is harder than Star anticipated when she took the job. How difficult do you think you’d find maintaining such a big lie?
6. Once Star and Rafe fall in love, they decide to spare Rafe’s family the hurt of telling them the truth about their fake-dating arrangement. Do you think that was the right decision?
7. When Star and Rafe begin dating for real, Star finds herself in an emotional upheaval and makes decisions that compromise who she truly is and wants to be. Did you have empathy for Star when she was attempting to change to fit in with Rafe’s family? Was it obvious to you that Rafe was unhappy with those changes?
8. Upon discovering that Arlo has always wanted commitment from Dawn, Star starts questioning her philosophy on life. Have you ever discovered a fact about someone that totally changed your view of them or yourself?
9. Do you think Star was right to finally cut Dawn out of her life? Would you have handled the situation differently?
10. How did you feel about Star’s decision to pursue a career and settle down with Rafe? Would you have made the same choice?
