Richard Dee was born in York, England, into a family of aviators; both his brother and father served as front-line pilots with the RAF. Dee’s early career was at the British Library working as a systems analyst before he started undergraduate and then Ph.D. studies in the field of cognitive neuroscience. He now works in Canada as a post-doctoral research Fellow conducting NASA-funded research into developing counter-measures for astronaut disorientation during the planned mission to Mars. Dee’s biography of Cayley allows him to combine his scientific and historical knowledge of aviation to produce an accessible and highly-readable account of one of aviation’ s unsung heroes. He lives in Toronto.
