Marcel Trudel
MARCEL TRUDEL (1917–2011), the eminent French-Canadian historian, was born in Saint-Narcisse-de-Champlain, Quebec. After graduating from Laval University, he studied and carried out research at Harvard University. During his academic career as a professor of history, Professor Trudel was director of the Institute of Canadian Studies at Carleton University, and, from 1966 to 1968, director of the department of history at the University of Ottawa. He was the author or compiler of more than twenty books on the history of Canada and Quebec, most notably the Atlas historique du Canada français, and the first three volumes of a multi-volume Histoire de la Nouvelle-France, of which the second volume, Le comptoir, 1604-1627, earned him a Governor General’s Award in 1967. Professor Trudel received several prizes and awards for his contributions to the recording of Canadian history.
