W. Stewart Macnutt

About the Author

W.S. MACNUTT (1908–1976) was dean of the faculty of arts at the University of New Brunswick, and author of New Brunswick: A History 1784-1867. His association with the Atlantic Provinces was a lifetime one. He was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and educated at Prince of Wales College there. At Dalhousie University in Halifax he acquired a B.A. degree (magnus cum honoribus), the Governor General’s Medal and an IODE Overseas Scholarship which took him to London University. Professor MacNutt received his Master’s degree in London and returned to Canada in 1941 to join the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He attained the rank of captain and served in Britain, North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe. In 1946 he joined the academic staff of the University of New Brunswick.
