How We’re Fighting Censorship: Organizations We Support

See more of what we’re doing to support the fight against book bans and learn how you can help here.

Penguin Random House stands for free expression as the foundation of our publishing. We believe in the importance of difference and debate in creative expression and its essential role in enriching our culture and protecting an open society.

But we can’t do this alone.

Through key partnerships, initiatives, and financial support, we’re able to break down barriers to get books in as many readers’ hands as possible.

Here are some of the organizations we partner with in the fight against censorship.

American Library Association: The oldest and largest library association in the world, the ALA provides leadership for the development, promotion, and improvement of library and information services to enhance learning and ensure access to information for all.

Authors Against Book Bans: A coalition of writers, illustrators, anthology editors and contributors, and other book creators whose aim is to protect the rights of all young people to access the books they need and deserve, through providing framework for local organizing, strategic calls to action at local and national levels, and partnerships with national and grass-roots groups that support the freedom to read.

National Council of Teachers of English: Through collaboration and community, shared stories and shared experiences, NCTE supports teachers and their students in classrooms, on college campuses, and in online learning environments.

The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression: Founded by the American Booksellers Association, the organization fights against censorship on behalf of authors, publishers, and the book industry as a whole.

Banned Books Week Coalition: An international alliance of diverse organizations joined by a commitment to increase awareness of the annual celebration of the freedom to read. The Coalition seeks to engage various communities and inspire participation in Banned Books Week through education, advocacy, and the creation of programming around the problem of book censorship.

National Coalition Against Censorship: An alliance of 52 organizations dedicated to protecting free expression through educating and empowering the public to fight censorship.

PEN America: The U.S. branch of PEN International, and the largest of PEN centers, PEN America is a writer-centered organization on the forefront of opposing censorship and defending writers.

PEN International: PEN International promotes literacy and campaigns internationally on issues of translation and freedom of expression throughout 145 centers and 104 countries.

Unite Against Book Bans: Unite Against Book Bans is a national initiative to empower readers everywhere to stand together in the fight against censorship. The campaign is organized by the American Library Association, with support from organizations representing parents, educators and librarians, students and readers, authors and publishers, community and advocacy organizations, businesses and workers, nonprofits and faith groups, elected officials and civic leaders, and concerned citizens who are united against book bans.
